Same-sex marriage has been a taboo since human beings came into existence and many people were considered ‘different’ and were treated with repugnance which leads to the path of mental illness and suicides. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code is an act that criminalized homosexuality and was introduced during the British rule of India (1861) stated: “whoever voluntarily has salacious intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisoning for life.”
The suicide story of a lesbian couple from Ahmedabad still shivers the LGBTQ community where two women ended their life from Ellis Bridge with a child as the love they had for each other was against society’s standards. The two women eloped from their homes to live together but society did not lead them to succeed and live a normal life. Many people from different parts of India faced such traumatizing experiences before the abolition of section 377. Many Indian parents resort to conversion therapy as a cure for homosexuality. This therapy not only led to depression anxiety and drug use but engender detestation.
However, on September 6, 2018, the supreme court decriminalized section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and allowed gay sex among consenting adults in private. It also commented that section 377 remains in force relating to sex with minors, non- consensual sexual acts, and bestiality.
