The privilege of being apolitical
Being neutral towards the decisions of the government, not taking part in political discussions, not giving your opinions towards what’s good or bad about the happenings in the country, indicates that you’re apolitical. Some people think their role in democracy is just to cast their vote every five years, and some people don’t even vote, and then some people choose NOTA for reasons that aren’t even logical, they all fall under the same category. Apolitical!
Voting is important, but not the one important role in democracy. Democracy is so much more than that, it is about all the things that most people usually ignore. It is about having the confidence to speak on an issue for which one thinks the government is/isn’t responsible. Sometimes, only a small group of the population is benefited on large scale but simultaneously the other part of the population is affected badly. In this case, people who aren’t affected won’t mostly care to show even a bare minimum effort to bring a change, and not talk about the issues that others are facing just because nothing has changed in their routine of life. Underprivileged people who get affected don’t even have the power to make their opinions reach out to other people and the people who hold the ability to address their issue don’t want to talk about it, because doing so won’t bring a significant change in their life.
Democracy is what people make for themselves; of themselves, hence it is really important to understand, to question, to analyze, and criticize the people who are there as a representative of the larger mass. While we do talk of democracy as a tool, and a very powerful one for that matter. It is important to understand that these are leaders and not rulers, that these are representatives and not flag bearers, that they are one among us for us and not for themselves. While we forget most of these and do not question what is at stake, we move to a phase where democracy vanishes and is minimized to a point of just vote bearers and muters after that. It is important to understand that these people are a part of the larger mass and that the decisions are to be questioned when they affect a larger group even if it’s not you and me.
If more and more people decide to mute themselves from talking about politics, it can destroy the possibility of the existence of an individual’s point of view to which most of the other people might also agree. You never know what changes your opinion can bring to the entire country for good, So talk!
