The Happiness Chemicals in our Body
The term happiness emphasizes one’s emotional well being. It deals with satisfaction, enlightenment, and positive emotions of intense joy. People often traverse over ways to stay happy and calm, ways to achieve their goals, but it is confounding to know that the warmth one feels from a long hug and one stands with pride after meeting success are completely different chemical sensations. These positive chemicals are Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins (Primarily known as D.O.S.E).
Understanding these chemicals, one can better decide if the latest trend can be a friend or foe for them.
Dopamine is basically responsible for motivating one to adopt a new habit and get through the to-do list. It helps in achieving the short-term goals by taking one step at a time. However, the effects of Dopamine are momentary and are very addictive in nature.
Oxytocin is basically behind the feeling of love, affection, and trust in a relationship. It is referred to as ‘Social Chemical’. The brain releases oxytocin during a long warm hug or any physical contact. Apart from the above phenomenon, oxytocin helps in fighting stress and improves relationships, and promotes positive emotions. One can increase the level of oxytocin in the body via positive social interaction or via offering warm gestures.
Serotonin is another social chemical that influences one to excel in their field. It plays a role in the dynamics of status and pride when an individual feels a sense of accomplishment and recognition. The brain releases this chemical when one graduates or reaches a crescendo of their goal. This motivates one to improve in their fields.
Endorphins are responsible to push one’s body beyond its comfort level and keep pegging away when one is on the verge of giving up. The feeling of bearing the pain while lifting a heavyweight can boost the endorphin level when lifted for more than 2 minutes. It is also referred to as the natural pain killer.
These chemicals manifest one’s body mentally and emotionally. These not only help to procure certain phenomenon but studies also proved their physical utility. By understanding their roles, one can differentiate the conditions of the situation and ways to tackle it positively as people tend to jumble different situations and hence end up in perplexity.
While emotions aren’t all science, it is also good to know the science behind it. While we understand the chemical changes and hormonal changes inside the body, we also need to understand what causes them, try to embrace positivity in lives, and stay away from negativity as much as possible. While it all plays an important role in our mental health, it is important to love self, others, and spread positivity around.
