Our interactions with the environment have been changing drastically especially since the turn of the 21st century. Mankind has been consuming in leaps and bounds beyond measure which is having an all-pervasive unsustainable &adverse long term impact on Earth. Global biodiversity continues to decline steeply, the health and functioning of crucial ecosystems like forests, oceans, rivers, and wetlands are being affected, extreme weather events are the new norms putting ecological balance completely off. At present, we are using resources of the ecosystem as though we had 1.7 Earths and such an ecological overshoot is possible only for a limited time before ecosystems begin to degrade and, ultimately, collapse.
Technology is the potential hope through which we can materially change our interactions with the environment and to a great extent mitigate if not annul the ramifications. From the high seas to the depths of the world’s most dense forests, technology can transform how we identify, measure, track, and value the many services and resources nature provides us with.
The technologies like satellite data and remote sensing can effectively manage our natural resources and use land patterns, forests, river bodies, riverine systems, wildlife habitats, minerals, agriculture, etc.
Upcoming AI has the unfathomable potential of making our actions smart and environment savvy/efficient e.g. smart home devices conserve energy by using artificial intelligence to shut off power to devices that aren’t in use or program them as per required use, screen technology offers an alternative to pen and paper in the form of eBooks and audiobooks.
Further, to name a few, the solar, wind, rainwater harvesting, grey-water Recycling Technology, Solar and Wind Harvesting Technologies, LED and CFL Lighting, biodegradable Plastic, non-electric or low-Power Exercise equipment, etc. are prominent environment-friendly technologies through which we can assuage the long term impacts on the environment.
Necessity is the mother of invention, hence technology is bound to evolve with the evolution of mankind but one thing we must always remember what Gandhi Ji said- “There is a sufficiency in the world for man’s need but not for man’s greed”. The long term sustainable solution lies in this statement. We need to critically review our consumption patterns and should tend to be frugal with it. Otherwise, no technology whatsoever would be able to save our planet from our gaseous-ever expansive greed.

At Mitti Ke Rang, we started with a COVID-19 community support fundraising, as an emergency response to provide a safety net to families. This will help them survive in the lockdown period. We aim to directly support these families by providing a minimum wage, through transferring the same into their accounts or partner with local NGO, Organisation, Fellow, or a Volunteer and support them with groceries.
