Sustainable Living: Way to get started
Before we begin the topic of sustainable living and how one should follow or rather practice it in his day to day life. It is necessary to understand what one means by sustainable living as a modern-day dictionary describes it as “any lifestyle based on energy-saving and environmental responsibility. “ In simpler terms, one needs to attempt or follow a lifestyle that leads to a collective reduction of earth’s natural resources. It is need of the hour to attempt to reduce the ecological footprint by changing mode of transport, domestic energy consumption if possible and even changes in diet.
Given that we will soon run out of oil and other finite natural resources, this is the perfect time for one to start shifting towards sustainable living. This shift will not only help us to secure limited resources for the upcoming generation but also aid us in the current scenario by reducing climate change effects. There is a recent shift from “shareholder’s profit” motive to organizations focusing on “sustainable development.” Hence, it is time that the world shifts to sustainable living, making societal and economic harmony, and restoring the ecosystems to the previous levels.
Now the question arises how can a regular Joe start following sustainable living practices. Initially, one should begin with basic ways, such as bringing his/her shopping bags to reduce the need for plastic or paper bags, using a handkerchief and reusable towels instead of paper cloth and napkins, avoiding cutting down of trees and protecting the environment and also reducing waste. One should also make his/her products from recyclable waste and support the artists and entrepreneurs who do that. Go for carpooling, use solar energy for your devices, and most importantly, don't forget to reduce, recycle, and reuse. Also, be a sustainability advocate and spread awareness regarding sustainable living, because a sustainable lifestyle is a new trend.
Sustainable living is a practice that is not a buzzword but has been practiced by many people, which includes women entrepreneurs too. A notable example of a woman entrepreneur who is using sustainable living practices is Bandana Jain, an artist from Mumbai who manufactures décor products from corrugated cardboard serving the sustainable living and empowering women in the community. In today’s age, sustainable living is not a single person’s work; it has to be a concentrated effort, and it should not only be followed but also be promoted in the community to achieve the necessary and desired results.

At Mitti Ke Rang, we started with a COVID-19 community support fundraising, as an emergency response to provide a safety net to families. This will help them survive in the lockdown period. We aim to directly support these families by providing a minimum wage, through transferring the same into their accounts or partner with local NGO, Organisation, Fellow or a Volunteer, and support them with groceries.
