International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

A new but very important day for all the female members of our society was introduced by United Nations (UN) and will be held every year on the 6th of February. It is an effort by the United Nations to reduce and eventually end the genital mutilation happening against women and girls in more than 30 countries of Africa and the Middle East, in some countries of Asia and Latin America and also amongst immigrant populations of Western Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) includes all the procedures which include damaging or changing the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is considered a violation of human rights. It also hurts a girl’s or woman’s integrity and health (Physical and Mental Health) in both the short term (In the form of Pain, shock, excessive bleeding, infections, and difficulty in passing urine) and long-term (sexual and reproductive health) and also mental issues such as insecurity, helplessness, stress and so much more. The latest states show that even in 2020 almost 4.1 million women were in danger of having to undergo genital mutilation.

This day spreads awareness about FGM which is a breach of the human rights of women and girls of our society. It reflects nothing but the inequality between the sexes and leads to discrimination against women.

Hence this should completely be stopped and females should also have all the rights to live their lives peacefully and happily.
