Increase of Signups in Dating Apps and its implication on Mental Health
Online dating applications are services that allow meeting one’s potential partner who basically is as sophisticated as the user. However, different users have different outlooks towards such services and this has created a major impact on the mental health of Indian youth.
In recent years, more than 50% of the Indian population has been using dating apps and out of this, 57.4% were male and 42.6% female. This clearly signifies the possibility of using such a site is to find love. Even if dating apps provide more access to their choices and convenience, it can be confusing too. Matching is a task for the users, as one user might not find a potential fit and ignore or reject the other party who was facing continuous rejection which tends to manifest the signs of inferiority complex. Ghosting is another term referred to, while one party stops talking or does not show up and this scenario is very common among millennial users. This impacts the affected party in a way than ever imagined and one can develop fear and anxiety of meeting new people.
Even people meet many users online, though connecting virtually may lead to shallow relationships if the parties tend to show different interests in real and shallowness can be manifested by symptoms of depression. Catfishing is one of the major factors leading to various mental illnesses, many users tend to falsify their identity and connect with different other users in order to catfish them. The majority of users often misunderstands and misleads the platform for hookups and casual relationships which will not only affect their casual and shallow relationships but also one can feel stuck over a toxic relationship.
Connecting people in real life rather than ‘reel’ life and focus on deep and meaningful relationships with a potential partner who has the same perspective and one’s back in best and worst times and is confident to spend life together forever. While the internet for sure has brought us all closer, it is important to understand that these platforms affect the thinking, attitude and behaviour of individuals. With fear of missing out imposed so much in the minds of people, it is important to understand that the validation isn’t all that matters. While dating apps these days are clearer with their objective and leaves it to the users in deciding what they want. While it is important to not inculcate the habits of dating by looks over even in real life.
Mental health is a very sensitive concept, while what may affect one maynot affect the other, but the reel world gives a lot of gateway for bullying, bodyshaming and various other issues, therefore it is important to know and understand when to stop and why.
