Gender roles are based on the different expectations that individuals, groups, and societies have of individuals based on their sex and based on each society’s values and beliefs about gender. Gender roles are the product of the relationship between individuals and their environments, and they signal individuals about what type of behavior is considered appropriate for which gender. Appropriate gender roles are defined according to a society’s beliefs about differences between the sexes.

Gender role discrimination isn’t something new, while we have come a long way in fighting against this discrimination, we still find women being told to aspire for feminine roles and leave the ‘tough job’ for the men. While a woman attains financial independence and roles of men, she is still expected to maintain a balance. Transgender is confined to furthermore stereotype than cisgender.

Gender role discrimination starts from the aspirations children start to have, if a boy aspires to be a nurse or a teacher he is labeled feminine, and if a girl aspires to become a pilot, mechanical engineer, or something related to that then she is considered a deviant. We teach children to confine to gender roles even before they understand what gender roles are, we discriminate even to aspire, this trend is changing, and though the change is slow it is progress. While we fight towards an equal system for all genders, we are yet to accept that gender and aspirations are two different entities. It needs to be kept separate. We look towards a time when there is no requirement to glorify women and transgender achievements and the trend becomes part of normal.

At Mitti Ke Rang, we started with a COVID-19 community support fundraising, as an emergency response to provide a safety net to families. This will help them survive in the lockdown period. We aim to directly support these families by providing a minimum wage, through transferring the same into their accounts or partner with local NGO, Organisation, Fellow, or a Volunteer, and support them with groceries.
