Cricket: More than a sport for Indians
It was 2011, it was the finals of the Cricket World Cup and every Indian held their breath; with Dhoni on the field, the victory felt more like a festival and joy spread across.
The first-ever match of first-class cricket played in India was in 1864, between Madras and Calcutta. India became a member of the ‘elite club’ joining England, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand in June 1932. India hasn’t looked back since then. After Independence, The new India had no place for teams based on ethnic origin, as a result, The Ranji trophy came into its own as the national championship. In 1971, India won a Test series in England for the first time, and the epic victory of the World Cup of1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev is still a cherished memory. the beginning of the 21st century saw the coming of the best players the country had seen. Sachin, Sourav, Dhoni, Rahul, Yuvraj, Harbhajan Singh are considered legendary players. The retirement match of Sachin and the 2011 World Cup becomes yet another milestone in the history of Indian cricket.
Cricket is followed religiously; today various tournaments have come up in the field of cricket yet each one of them is viewed differently and has a completely different fan base. The retirement of every cricketer is a moment of loss and the onset of a new beginning.
